Examine your dog like a vet

You might not be a veteran when it comes to diagnosing your dog but it can really help you in identifying changes that may give birth to a certain disease. You may learn how to examine your dog like a vet.

My objective is to help you analyze the problem before your dog gets seriously ill and needs expensive medical treatment. People who are more attached to their pet can find out immediately if there is anything wrong with their pet. Knowing about some useful tips and tools needed to examine your dog can assist you in becoming a better pet parent. You can easily identify that a subtle change is a big issue.

When your pet gets critically ill, most of the time it happens when your vet is closed and you have to rush him into Afterhours emergency clinic! On the other side, if you are able to book an appointment just after the time you suspect a problem not only saves you the time but it also saves you the late night drive to the emergency hospital.

Dogs as we know only have limited ways of communicating with us as they cannot speak! Like other animals, dogs also have it in their instinct to hide their weaknesses. In Animal kingdom or society, weak animals are not helped and are usually left behind or are hunted down as a source of food.

Be warned!

Before we proceed any further, keep it in your mind that you should not search on the Internet after your examination! Many diseases have similar clinical signs and Internet cannot assist you in diagnosing them like a medical professional.

Observe your pet

Examine the movement of your dog from a distance, is there a slight limp. Sometimes when the sore leg is placed on the ground, an upward hitch at the hip, head or the shoulder is observed. This will be difficult to analyze but can be seen after a long walk or after resting. You can observe your dog’s knee pointing outwards while he is sitting or he is leaning at one side.

Physical observation

This is what marks a line between the human doctor and a veterinarian. Dogs cannot tell what they are going through so you have to depend on touch to examine changes. Run your hand all over your dog and identify areas which are painful or tense, examine ears and mouth, count his breathing and also do not forget to smell anything unusual.

Some important areas to take a notice for:

Ears

Look your dog’s ear carefully and get accustomed to how the look and smell. If they suddenly start to look red with a higher amount of discharge coming out or they smell bad then rush your pet to his vet immediately.

Eyes

If you see your dog’s eyes squinched or there is redness in the eye you should not ignore it. Eyes are a very sensitive organ and even a little corneal ulcer can cause intense pain and lead to blindness. Early examination and treatment of eyes play an important role in recovery and avoiding any surgery.

Mouth

Dogs teeth may be prone to dental disease genetically but dogs do not brush their own teeth as we all know. If you detect discolouration, redness along the gum line, smell or damaged teeth then you need to take your dog to receive a dental care.
